I come from a long line of women unable to pass up a sale. If my grandmother sees sixty-dollar jeans on sale for ten dollars, it doesn’t matter if they fit well; she will buy them. She must buy them. My sister can’t go into a store without running through the clearance section, and has piles of little knick-knacks in a special closet that her kids come to when they need a last minute birthday present. I cannot stand to see markdowns without taking advantage and therefore have five times more sheets in my house than beds, as well as an embarrassingly large collection of soup bowls.

Yet despite all that, I was still surprised to walk into my kitchen one day and find over a hundred boxes of Cheerios. They were stacked in shaky towers all over the kitchen floor, table, and countertops. They weren’t flavored, or special. Just a regular yellow box of tiny loops of cereal - Cheerios. I don’t think that any of my siblings or I even liked Cheerios then, not to mention how much our hatred of them grew as we were forced to eat Cheerios for breakfast every day for two years. After I was given a moment to process the mess in the kitchen, the only explanation that I could find was, there must have been a sale, but still it seemed unlikely.
