After a long, gloomy and snowy winter it is finally turning into spring outside. Not the wannabe spring with dark looming clouds and snow flurries every other day, but the ultimate spring where trees blossom, flowers bloom, and the sky is devoid of gray for at least five days in a row. It is the kind of spring that as soon as kids get home from school they go straight for their bicycles and rollerblades while parents camp out on the front porch clutching a cold glass of lemonade.

I love spring with its new life and fresh starts, but I also love how everyone around me tends to get a little spring fever. I for one find it extremely difficult to be locked up in an office all day while the sun is beaming onto the grass outside my window. For me this kind of spring means after work volleyball, hiking, skateboarding and treats to eat during these activities. I swear in the spring and summer months I spend an obscene amount of my hard earned cash on desserts: cobblers, pies, popsicles, brownies and ice cream treats.

Admittedly, I am not the best cook. Once in a strangely blue moon I can handle the basic batch of chocolate chip cookies or even a tin of muffins when I am feeling adventurous. But mostly I rely on the easy, premade or freezer desserts. Of course it would be wrong of me to eat a full batch of brownies on my own so I often take treats to barbeques, parties and sometimes, when I am feeling friendly, I even take them to work. Luckily I am able use a lot of buy one get one free with coupon promotions.

Before heading to the store I always glance through a few ads online and am continually shocked to see the amount of “free with coupon” promotions that are printed there. For instance, if I purchase ice cream I can get fudge or butterscotch topping free with coupon. Then, if I want brownies to put under the ice cream I can buy one pack of ready to cook brownies and get one free with coupon. Usually I start drooling at my computer just thinking of putting fresh strawberries on top of my ice cream fudge brownie.

My sister-in-law is the one who hooked me on coupon scouting. She is always telling me she saved this much on her groceries and didn’t have to pay for her milk because it came free with coupon. At first I thought that looking for coupons sounded like a lot of work and I doubted it was going to save me any money in the long run. I mean sitting at a kitchen table for an hour sorting through and clipping coupons was not my idea of a good time. Then she laughed, shook her head, and told me she gets most of her savings online. Its way faster that way.

Still skeptical I opened up my internet browser and started typing in the search bar. Of course she was right. The page opened and right there were éclairs free with coupon and bananas free with coupon and I went nuts playing with my calculator and figuring out how much I could be saving.

Now, I am not proud of my spring sugar intake so sometimes I will get a watermelon free with coupon to counterbalance all the popsicles, sodas, and cookies. Hey, we can’t all be perfect, right? Besides, all those calories don’t really count because they were free with coupon anyway.
