How to travel with your pet

More than 78 million dogs are pets in the United States, and 39 percent of U.S. households own at least one dog, according to the American Pet Products Association.

A Gallup Poll found that the majority of Americans — 64 percent — go on vacation every year.

Do the math. Dog-owners are bound to go on vacation. And in many cases, that may mean bringing Fido (or Charlie, or Tyson Barkford) on vacation with you. In fact, estimates 30 to 40 millions people in the United States travel with their pets every year.

Here are some ways to make a vacation with your pet more pleasant — for both of you.

1. Before you get in the car, consider your circumstances. If your pet is very old, sick or destructive, consider hiring a pet-sitter to stay home with him.
