Best travel clothing for kids

Before going on a vacation, most people hit the stores to pick up a few special outfits for the trip. A swimming suit. A going-out dress. Some new flip-flops.

But what about the kids?

Packing just the same ol’ stuff they wear every day may not be practical, depending on where you’re going; and it’s sure not as fun.

Here are some great travel clothing ideas for kids:

1.  A new North Face jacket. Especially if your vacation includes being outdoors, camping, the mountains, skiing or going somewhere with moody weather. North Face has a solid reputation for quality and style. Like the popular girl’s Clairy Jacket, $75, at This jacket is waterproof, breathable, streamlined and boasts fully sealed seam to shut out the rain — perfect for a trip to London or Seattle. Comes in three colors.

Save money: Use the coupon code for free ground shipping on climbing, hiking, running and yoga apparel, plus get 4 percent cash back from

2.  Check REI’s infant and toddler’s section for younger kids. In addition to being practical and high quality, you can find some super cute styles here. Our favorite: The Monkey In My Pocket hoodie in orange, $32.50.

3. Don’t forget to pack sunglasses for your little one, no matter the climate. It’s important to protect their eyes from the sun starting at a young age. If they’re older, let them pick out their own style from the long list of kid’s sunglasses at REI. We’re loving the RKS My First Shades, $15, with the wrap-around, neoprene head band. If you’re ever tried to keep sunglasses on a 2-year-old, you’ll know why this is crucial. Not to mention these glasses are 100 percent UVA and UVB protectant.

Save money: Use the REI coupon to save 20 percent on one full-price item at, plus one item on the REI Outlet — and get an additional 3 percent cash back from

4. Pack one special, fun item – something you kids would never get to wear at home. If you’re going to Disney World, that might be a new Mickey Mouse hat or a princess dress. If you’re going to the beach, it might be a new beach towel.

If you’re going on an outdoor adventure, there’s always the kid’s Uncle Milty’s Travel Vest, starting at  $29.49 on Kids, by nature, love pockets. Love them. This vest offers your munchkins 17 pockets to fill with their treasures, snacks and toys. This is great for a fishing excursion, a hiking trip or even to the beach; you can find all kinds of pocket-sized treasures in the sane.
