We may still be in the midst of some heated post-season playoffs, but the Super Bowl will be here before you know it. Hosting a party for friends and family? Don’t let the celebrations derail you from your New Year’s Resolutions to get healthy and fit this new year. Check out our simple tips and ideas for a slimmed down Super Bowl experience.
Slimmed down spread
The traditional appetizers served at sports events are not figure-friendly. However, for any appetizer you enjoy – like chicken wings, potato skins and creamy dips – there is sure to be a healthier, slimmed down version to try. Check out this list of Healthy Super Bowl Recipes and Menus from Eatingwell.com.
Other healthy appetizer ideas to consider are to swap hummus for ranch dip (or just serve it alongside for a healthier veggie dip choice), set out fresh fruit instead of processed cookies or skip the heavy cheese dip in favor of a flavorful salsa.
Low-Cal sips
Remember, drinks like margaritas or fruit daiquiris are calorie bombs. Wine, light beer and vodka-seltzer drinks are all excellent choices that will allow you to indulge without damage to your waistline. Dilute white wine with club soda to enjoy a sparkling cocktail with half the calories.
Sip smarter by alternating your cocktails with six to eight ounces of water. Not only will you minimize your calorie intake, but you’ll also ensure that your Monday morning won’t be too painful.
If you want to avoid alcohol and unnecessary calories altogether, consider drinking a fun non-alcoholic beverage (also known as a mocktail). Mix club soda with smashed strawberries and a splash of lemon juice for a fizzy strawberry-lemonade. Mint, cucumber, and lime can be mixed with water or seltzer for a mojito effect.
Actively enjoy
Have your own flag football game outside before the Super Bowl starts. The fresh air and exercise just may help you to eat less when the festivities start – after all we all love that great feeling exercise and a healthy lifestyle can give us.
It’s tempting to just sit back and relax throughout the game, but why not turn it into an active affair with friends and family? Hit the deck like the mascots and do pushups for every point scored.
Instead of a classic “drinking game” create an exercise game to participate in. Have everyone choose sides and when the opposing team scores do an exercise of your challenger’s choice like a minute of jumping jacks or lunges.
