Saving money can be tough, but in an economy like this one, it’s essential. It might seem a little weird to think there are gadgets out there that can save you money. After all, if you’re trying to save money, should you really be going for more technology?
Fortunately, there are a lot of low-cost gadgets that can serve as an investment toward future savings. Devices can help you cut down on electricity usage, for example, and you can use electronics you already own – like your computer or a smartphone – to save money, as well.
Cut back on energy costs
Some devices can help you dial back on electricity, cutting the cost of the biggest energy hog appliances. Energy monitors you plug in with your devices, for example, can help you track exactly how much your biggest devices cost you, and you can find them at a number of retailers – including Walmart, which offers 3 percent cash back, and Amazon.
Other little things can help cut costs, too – like French press coffee makers instead of the electric version, and a home water filter to replace buying bottles. Plenty of in-home appliances that can cut back on your costs are available from Walmart and Target, which offers 2 percent cash back, as well as department stores such as Sears, where you can currently get up to 4 percent cash back.
Use what you have
If you’ve already got a computer or a smartphone, you have a number of alternatives in the form of software and apps that can save you money. Services such as Skype and ooVoo, for example, can help you cut way back on your phone costs, and you might try replacing your cable service with Netflix or Hulu instead.
Smartphone owners can take advantage of a breadth of apps that do all kinds of things, from helping you cut your texting, data and call costs by using chat and voice-over-Internet alternatives, to planning your finances and budgeting. And if you want to save a few bucks on apps, try grabbing gift cards to the iTunes App Store, Google Play Store or Amazon Appstore from retailers where you can get cash back. Target, Walmart and Amazon already offer gift cards to other stores, which are as good as cash – but better, if you can get them cheaper.
The key to successfully using gadgets to save money is to get creative. Find alternatives to things that cost you a lot and you can really save. Just be sure to shop around on your electronics to make sure the investment is worth it.
