During Kate Middleton’s pregnancy, we saw lots of side-by-side photos comparing today’s maternity style with the fashions of the 1980′s when Princess Diana was pregnant. Oh how times have changed. And for the better. Much better.

Maternity clothes today are chic and reinterpret current trends and classic looks to really showcase the baby bump — rather than hide it under a tent of cloth. We’re talking wrap sweaters that are cozy but not bulky and distressed skinny jeans with a smooth elastic waistband.

Over at Old Navy, maternity shopping is made easy — with a new system that lets you shop by the trimester, with comfy and stylish options conveniently grouped by how far along you are and a special “post pregnancy” section. We have a feeling this shop was designed by a mama.

First and second trimester fashion: Apparel from this section recognizes that you may not have sent out that office e-mail yet saying you’re expecting a stork delivery. So, the thought behind these fits is to be discreet, with flexible fits. Pleated tops and empire waists – like this maternity long tie-waist top – allow for growth without sacrificing your style.

Second and third trimester fashion: It’s all about coverage and comfort, say the designers at Old Navy. (Think: Leggings, tunics, stretchy bottoms, full panel jeans, dresses with flowy silhouettes). Extra long tanks will stretch over your baby bump and are a “must-have” item. One of our faves? This side-tie jersey tunic that is on sale for $14.

The whole nine months: Your style will be focused on comfort and versatility. Empire-waist dresses are a great pick because they can be remixed throughout the seasons — worn cardigans and jackets in the fall and winter or with a statement necklace or scarf come summer. This maternity v-neck tie-belt dress in teal blue is a stand-out.

Post-pregnancy: Be patient with yourself. You probably won’t slide right back into your pre-pregnancy wardrobe right away. Old Navy’s stylists suggest comfy sweaters, knit tops, leggings and roll-panel jeans. This maternity cowl-neck nursing dress is stylish and has a discreet under layer for nursing.
