When we came across Alyssa from Alyssa Said Hi and read her bio — “Almost married. Always awesome” — we were instantly intrigued. And after reading her blog, we were hooked. Alyssa loves coffee shops, and next time we are in town, we hope to chat over lattes. Meet Alyssa …
Where I’m based: Greensboro, N.C. It’s right in the middle of the state, three hours from the beach, and three hours from the mountains. It’s perfect!
How long I’ve been blogging: I’ve been blogging since 2009, but Alyssa Said Hi! was born in March 2013
Blog/business basics: My blog is based around a set of goals that I set for myself a few months ago, so you’ll see a lot of recipes, meal planning, and budgeting on my blog. Obviously, I also talk about all the things the average 20-year-old cares about — fingernail polish, boxed wine and shopping at Target. You know, really groundbreaking stuff. Occasionally, I love talking about politics. I’m passionate about women’s rights issues and education, so you’ll see some of that too. Basically, anything goes over in the land of Hi! It used to bother me that my blog didn’t have a specific “niche,” but then I realized that I can’t put myself in a neat little box, so why should I do it to my blog?
What do you enjoy most about blogging? I love the tight-knit community that blogging provides, I’ve met some of the most amazing people that I’m proud to call friends. Not just “internet friends,” but real, actual friends. And there’s always someone new to discover or a new perspective to read about. The diversity in the blogging community is just fabulous.
Guilty pleasure: Reality TV, definitely. Specifically, the Real Housewives of anywhere. Naturally, my fiancé thinks this is ridiculous.
Last thing I bought: The last thing I bought was some really bold, bright pink lipstick, and it’s pretty much the best decision I ever made.
How’s the wedding planning? What’s your wedding going to be like? Wedding planning is on pause for the moment while my fiancé moves to North Carolina, but it’s still super exciting! My wedding is going to be awesome, naturally. I want people to feel at home and comfortable, but still ready to party! I’m obviously thrilled to be getting married, but I’m super excited to have all of my friends and family in the same place for a night.
What do you do daily to be more awesome? You mean after I’ve had at least two cups of coffee, right? I try to be as optimistic and enthusiastic as I can, even when I don’t want to be. My friends always joke that if I was going to get any superlative, it would be “Most Likely to Love Everything” and it’s true. We only get one shot at this whole life thing, so we might as well have fun with it, right?
Does a coffee shop have to fit a certain criteria for you to hang there? As ridiculous as this is, I like for them to be as small as possible. Not too small, but I love cozy little shops where everyone knows everyone else. At my favorite shop in Greensboro, all the baristas know my name and my order. I love being a regular somewhere (cue Cheers theme song).
What’s the best part about growing up (so far)? My favorite part of being a grownup so far is being able to eat whatever I want, whenever I want, and no one is around to tell me not to. I don’t, obviously, or I would weigh nine thousand pounds. But knowing that I can eat pizza for breakfast, ice cream for lunch and cereal for dinner is truly a wonderful thing.
