1. Find a mid-sized blank canvas and paint it a bright, cheery color. You’ll be able to brighten up any room just by hanging it on the wall.

2. Find some cheap accent pillows. They’ll refresh the look of your old couch without reupholstering.

3. Add shelving liners to your kitchen cabinets for a quick and easy way to change how you look at your drawers.

4. A little plant can bring new life into a room. Find one that requires little maintenance if you travel often.

5. Small items, like a vase or tablecloth, can pull a room together around a table. This is perfect for any place that you entertain guests.

Coupon Fraud: When is it Okay?

Monday, March 29th, 2010

There has been a lot of buzz in the past year about bloggers promoting printable coupons (and specifically printable grocery coupons) and there should be: these coupons help you stay within your budget while still getting the things you want and need.

Every successful blogger that I’ve seen who writes about couponing is not only extremely smart, but also extremely savvy. They know that there are a couple of things you can do to “cheat the system”, but they don’t promote them.

Why not? Well, beyond the legal issues (after all, fraud IS illegal), there are a few more:

1. Coupon Fraud hurts your local grocery store. I know you may be thinking that the grocery store you go to most frequently is a big chain, but even small instances of theft (because technically, that’s what this is) do add up. They lose money because the coupon providers won’t accept the coupon they’ve sent in… even though it may have scanned when you were at the register. And if you do shop at a locally-owned store, you’re hurting people you know and damaging their livelihood.

2. Coupon Fraud hurts your neighbors… and you! Sure, you’re getting a good deal, but the money that the grocery store just lost has to come from somewhere. So, prices go up, amenities go down and the overall environment will decrease in quality. Plus, jobs could be cut to make up for the loss in revenue. I know it sounds extreme to you – and that just your actions can’t do all this – but it adds up fast if we don’t all hold ourselves accountable.

3. The couponing community loses respect. I’ve heard some horror stories about shoppers getting berated by cashiers when they use coupons and, while I’ve never experienced it personally, a lot of the anger comes from people thinking that the couponer is “cheating” to save money. Those of us who aren’t doing anything wrong get punished for crimes they didn’t commit, making it harder and harder to convince people of the great benefits of coupons!

Ultimately, you need to come to your own decision on this one… after all, it’s your conscience and while it may be a short-term benefit to your wallet, the long-term effects can be extremely destructive. Don’t believe me? Here’s what Crystal over at MoneySavingMom.com said last year about copying coupons:

Unless a coupon is a PDF hosted on the manufacturer’s website, it is *ALWAYS* unethical and illegal to copy a coupon.

Each of these coupons has a unique barcode and the store will only be reimbursed for coupons with a unique barcode. So if you copy them, the store will not be reimbursed and you will also be committing coupon fraud.

Not only could this get you into serious trouble, but this also means that stores will be less likely to accept internet printed coupons–which is the last thing any of us want.

Happy Shopping!

Five Tips to Help You Save Money in March!

groceries

While March is a great time for so many wonderful things (St. Patrick’s Day, the first official day of Spring and a multitude of fabulous moments), it’s also another chance to start your new shopping lifestyle! Here are a couple of tips to really make a difference this month:

1. Create a budget: if you know where all of your money is going, you’ll be less likely to spend beyond your means. There are great sites that offer budgeting tools… one of my favorites is Dave Ramsey’s Gazelle Budget, but Mint.com offers a fabulous one, too. Lay everything out on paper and stick to it. You may have to tweak a couple of things in April, but you’ll have a good starting point!

2. Start clipping coupons: By preparing your budget beforehand, you’ll know how much money you can spend on groceries. My tip? Challenge yourself! Set your grocery spending to less than you normally pay, and head over to ShopAtHome.com’s Printable Grocery Coupons page. There you’ll find a large collection (usually over 800) unique grocery coupons! You can print two of each per computer, so if there’s a must-have item available, grab two and stock up at a great price.

3. Don’t be too hard on yourself! If you’ve never done a budget before, it’s not an easy thing to jump into. Take your time and wean yourself into it. It’s better to have a slow start and stick with it than jump in headfirst and get overwhelmed!

4. Get the family involved: Have kids? Let them know what you’re trying to do and get them to participate, whether you have them help you clip coupons or set up a chore chart with financial goals. Married? Sit down with your spouse and create your budget together; if you’re on the same page financially, you’ll be more likely to hold each other accountable.

5. Ask for help if you need it: Whether you need an accountability partner, or just want some extra tips on how to increase your saving momentum, there are so many places that you can find a helpful hand! Whether it’s your spouse or roommate, a coworker or close friend, having someone to lean on when you want to buy something silly will help you out immensely.

Karen from FrugalRIMama: Making Money from Surveys

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

It’s Karen from Frugal Rhode Island Mama back again.  I’m so excited to be featured on the Shop At Home blog again this month!  The last two times I talked about saving money at CVS and Walgreen’s using their “rebate” programs and next month I’ll talk about doing the same at Rite Aid but this month I wanted to move in a different direction since it’s almost the beginning of a new year.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have money set aside to do all your holiday shopping next year?  It would be, huh?  I’d like to tell you about a way you can do this starting today into 2010.  How you ask?  Taking surveys… real surveys… ones that pay you actual cash or gift cards for your opinion.  There are a LOT of real survey company’s out there that want to do exactly that.  Here are a few things to know in order to get started.

survey_header

  1. The first thing I want to point it is NEVER pay to get a list or gain access to a website of survey company’s.  This is a scam to get your hard earned cash.  You can find all the information you need for FREE online in so many places, including my website.
  2. Open a different email account to use when you start to join survey companies.  There are several reasons I suggest this.  The most important reason is so that your survey invites will all be together in one place so when you want to access them you can.  Also some companies will email you several times a day so your inbox could fill up fast.  The other reason is for SPAM.  I want to point out that the real, good survey companies WILL NOT spam you nor will they sell your email address.  But unfortunately you may sign up for one you think is OK, but isn’t so it’s better to be safe then sorry.
  3. You will have to give your name, address, telephone number and other personal information to the survey companies.  Unfortunately, this will be required especially if you want to get paid but mostly not to waste your time.  They will try their best to match you up with surveys that are fit for you.
  4. Once you join a survey company, you’ll need to likely fill out some sort of profile. Some of these can be very in depth and others are not.  Again, this is to match you with surveys in their system.  It just makes it easier if they know your likes, dislikes, family, hobbies, etc.
  5. Usually once you sign up you will receive emails asking you to take a quick screener to see if you qualify for the survey.  In that same email, it will usually state how long it should take and how much you’ll make, whether in points or dollars.
  6. You will be paid either cash or you’ll receive points.  If you receive points then you’ll be able to cash them in for either cash, gift cards and/or prizes.  Some companies will give you an entry into a drawing on top of or in place of a cash/point payment.   The ones who pay cash with either send you a check or Paypal payment and sometimes you can even choose.

Once you are signed up with several companies, you’ll start to receive a bunch of survey invites every single day.   Now these survey invites are likely screener surveys that will be short and then you’ll either get into the longer survey or you won’t qualify.  Don’t get discouraged if you don’t qualify, you will at other times.

As you earn money or points you can let them build up in your account and then in late summer or early fall request payment and you’ll have money for holiday shopping!  It’s very possible you could have all of your holiday shopping money depending on how many survey’s you take throughout the year.

It’s a great way to earn some extra cash.  It is slow coming so you’re better to leave the money in your account and let it build up for a while and set a goal.  Holiday shopping is a good one, but vacation or a shopping spree is another.

Now that you know all this you probably want to know what companies are the good ones and which ones you should join.   I’ve done all the research for you so if you head on over to my site and look in the Paid Survey Sites Section you’ll see a nice list of each survey company I’ve worked with, my thoughts about them, and even proofs of payment from some of them.  It took me a while to find them all so I’m saving you the work.  It was a bit of trial and error and sometimes I did sign up for some that lead me nowhere and I also found some great companies through friends.  Word of mouth is always great!

The most important thing I forgot to mention is not only will you get paid to take these surveys but you will be able to give your opinion or perhaps tell of your experience with a particular company, service or product.  Sometimes, you’ll even receive products to try out and then give your opinion on.  I like when that happens!  But I especially love knowing that I have an impact on things and what I have to say really matters.   Because when it comes down to it, the extra money is nice but it’s also nice to know that companies want to know what we have to say and they even take it into consideration.

OK, go sign up for some companies and make some Holiday Cash for next year!!! Then come back to ShopAtHome.com and spend it all through there and earn more money back!!

Top Five Ways to Save Money on ShopAtHome.com

Monday, October 26th, 2009

I realized that while many of you use ShopAtHome.com, you probably don’t know about every part of the site… and you should! There are so many different and exciting things that we have to offer you, and you shouldn’t miss one.

These are the top five things every user must know about to truly be a smart shopper!

234x60

1. Toolbar!: This is my dirty little (not-so) secret when it comes to saving money. Let’s face it, we ALL forget to do the little things every now and then. With the ShopAtHome.com Free Shopping Toolbar, there’s nothing to forget. If you’ve got it on your browser, you’re getting cash back at many of your favorite sites! Head over to the Toolbar page, download yours and get ready to watch the Cash Back checks start flowing!

2. Tell-A-Friend: You shouldn’t be keeping all this great information to yourself, now should you? Plus, for every friend you tell about ShopAtHome.com, they get $5… and you get $5 after they make a qualifying purchase! Want to learn more? I wrote about our Tell-A-Friend program. Read it here.

3. Exclusive, Exclusive, Exclusive!: Whether you’re vying for an extra $500 for Christmas or just looking to grab the latest and greatest deals before anyone else, head over to our Facebook and Twitter pages and keep track of what we’re doing. Learn about everything first (and, if you’re part of Facebook, get your own special Facebook Exclusive page on ShopAtHome.com!) so that you can find out how to save (or win!) even more money.

4. Cash Back Rebates: This one is a huge, HUGE money saver, and I use it as much as possible. ShopAtHome.com has set up affiliate programs with thousands of merchants and instead of hogging of that referral money for ourselves, we share it with our users! In fact, in 2009 alone, we have given back over 1.8 MILLION dollars in Cash Back rewards to shoppers like you. What does this mean for you? Every time you think about heading to Diapers.com, ShopBop, Target or Victoria’s Secret you can get some of the money you spent back in your wallet. Plus, it makes those slightly frivolous purchases just seem so much more wonderful!

5. Coupons: Whether you love Printable Coupons (we currently have the largest selection of printable coupons available on the web… I just nabbed my $2/1 Nestle Candy Coupons!) or are a fan of using coupon codes for shopping online and getting a fabulous deal, there’s something for everyone.

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to start spending (and, of course, saving!) my money. With the holidays quickly approaching, there’s no better way to Spend and Save than with ShopAtHome.com!

Homemade Halloween: Tips and Costume Ideas

Friday, October 16th, 2009

When I was younger, my parents got creative a LOT. As the oldest of three girls (and we’re pretty close in age), my parents were trying to feed us, clothe us and keep a roof over our heads on one income.

But they were so good at it. We may have gone without some things, but we never knew. One of the times that my mother’s creativity really came out was during Halloween. My sisters and I had some of the coolest costumes, and they cost a ton less than the basic store-bought costumes (plus, you never saw anyone else in the same look!). We loved playing dress up during Halloween, getting our costumes together, our Halloween hairstyles and the works. Here are a few of my favorite Halloween costume ideas, along with how to do them:

Bunch of Grapes: My sister rocked this costume when she was four… it was so much fun and totally cute (although the clothing pieces were easier to find in the 80′s… you may have to dye your own if you can’t get the right bits!). What you need:

    1. Purple shirt

    2. Purple pants

    3. Balloons (preferably purple, too)

    4. Safety Pins

growing-grapes

You can go with green or red as different color options… we chose purple. This Halloween costume idea doesn’t even really need a step-by-step; it’s so easy that the four-year-old could almost do it themselves (of course, you need adult supervision for the safety pins!). Have the child put on the shirt and pants, blow up the balloons and pin to the clothing. Voila!

This next costume is my personal favorite. I wore this when I was six or so (the same year my sister wore her grapes costume). It’s all kinds of fabulous… or, at least it was when I was six!

Candy Buttons: Easy, but does require a day or two to get ready. What you need:

    1. Poster Board

    2. Styrofoam Balls (cut in half)

    3. Spray paint (bright, fun “candy” colors)

    4. Hole Puncher

    5. Glue

    6. String

89_L_necco-candy-buttons

Ahead of time, lightly spray the halved Styrofoam balls (spray them too closely and they’ll disintegrate) with colors in a gradient-style (make them look as close to Candy Buttons as possible. If the paint from one gets on the other, all the better!) until they’re all coated. Let them dry for 24 hours. After this period, use glue (whether you use basic glue or a hot glue gun is up to you… basic glue is safer and less likely to melt the Styrofoam, though) to put them on the poster board. Let those dry, then punch holes in the top of the poster board. Loop the string through it and either lace it around the neck or make it sandwich-board style with two poster boards. I will say that the second option is harder when it comes to playing Halloween games or

Tips & Tricks on How to Have a Happy Halloween

Friday, October 9th, 2009

halloween

Halloween is just around the corner, so it’s time to make some plans for what you’re going to do! Here are a couple of ShopAtHome.com’s favorite tips & tricks; for more fun Halloween ideas and safety tips, visit the Halloween Guide.

1. Buddy System: Always make sure that the kids go together when Trick-or-Treating and with an adult, if possible. If they are going out as a group without parents, make sure at least one child has a cell phone so you can stay in contact. It’s safer and less stressful when you know they’ll be together!

2. Keep the Party Home!: Whether you don’t want the kids wandering around the neighborhood, or think they’re too young to go out on their own, you can do an alternative: host a party! Decorate your basement or living room like a not-too-scary haunted house, have a bunch of snacks and candy, turn up the music and turn off the worry.

3. Candy Candy Candy!: When I was younger and Trick-or-Treating, I’d gorge myself on candy and I wouldn’t stop until I felt sick. Once the kids get back (and after they’re done counting and trading their candy bars!), limit the amount they can have. That way, they won’t feel sick and you won’t be exhausted because the little ones are on a never-ending sugar high.

4. Pumpkin Carving: A fun family tradition, pumpkin carving is a blast, but it can be dangerous for the little ones. Let them sketch their own designs, but do all the cutting yourself. And make sure to clean and bake the seeds for a yummy, healthy treat!

5. Cute Costuming: Let’s face it, Halloween costumes are EXPENSIVE. Keep the prices down by shopping during sales (check out the best days for Halloween Cash Back here on ShopAtHome.com) and getting the most from your money. Get creative and make a DIY costume!

It’s easy to have a safe and fun Halloween! Have any other tips that you’d add? Let us know in the comments!
