5 Ways to Save Money on Gas

How to Save Money on Gas

Spring is in the air! Birds are chirping, grills are being fired up, and parks are filling with people eager to soak up the sunshine. With the season comes all sorts of fun outdoor activities: baseball games, picnics, hiking and travel, to name a few.

This increase in activity is great, but what about the high cost of fuel we are currently facing? A road trip or vacation that might have been affordable for a family a year ago may be looking less feasible in light of the rising price of gas. The extra costs associated with getting to your destination can cut into your activity budget, or even make a trip impossible.

In order to save some cash so that you can multiply your fun, here are some great tips for cutting back on your fuel consumption:

1.   When buying gas, shop around. If you are a member of Sam’s Club or Costco you can buy fuel at a discounted rate. Likewise, check your local grocery stores. Many have programs that offer discounts for gasoline if you carry their savings or rewards card.

2.   Don’t crank up the AC in your car. Yes, it’s true, running the air conditioning reduces fuel economy. When possible, turn it off and simply use the ventilation system in your vehicle, or roll down the windows and enjoy the fresh air! One thing to note: Surprisingly, while having the windows down is better in terms of saving gas than running the air conditioner, the wind and turbulence created by doing so can actually waste gas as well; so your very best bet is to pump air without ac through the car.

3.  Make sure you know where you’re going. Don’t waste time and fuel taking a longer than necessary route, or by getting lost.  Pre-determine the best way to get to your destination, whether it is a daily commute or a visit to a new place. Be sure to factor in traffic, construction zones and other factors which may influence your drive. The shortest route may not be the fastest!

4.   Remove bulk. If you have a ski rack, or even a full trunk, take the time to remove this excess weight from your car and watch your fuel stretch further.

5.  Perhaps the best way to save money on gas is to simply drive less. If possible, carpool to work and other activities. When road-tripping it, pile into the biggest car available and split the cost. You may lose out on comfort on the drive, but you’ll have more money to spend at your destination!  Take public transportation when available, and explore activities that are within walking distance.  If you are making multiple stops in one area, park your car and walk to each destination. Not only will you save money on gas, but you’ll incorporate exercise into your errand-running!
