Kate from TheShoppingMama.com: Best Shopping Apps for Your iPhone

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

When you’re shopping from the comfort of your own home, it’s easy to comparison shop and find the best deals – visit ShopAtHome.com, of course. But, when you’re on the go and shopping at brick and mortar stores comparing prices is a bit of a challenge unless you want to drive from store to store. And, clearly that’s no fun and it’s just not practical. Thankfully modern technology is here to help. Here are some must have iPhone Apps to help you shop and save on the go.

Shop Savvy

Turn your phone into a barcode with this free app (also available for download to Google Android). Aim your camera phone at a bar code and hold still. From there, Shop Savvy does all the work. It scans the barcode and searches more than 20,000 online and local retailers to find the best price. Using your location, Shop Savvy will tell you the best local major retailer (think Target, Best Buy, Walmart) to buy the product. It will also let you know where to find the best price online. With the prices right in front of you, make an educated decision whether to buy in store or online. You can even add items to a Wish List and receive Price Alerts. This App is so cool, it’s hard to believe it’s free.

Coupon Sherpa

This App generates in-store coupons based on your location. So, when you’re at the mall, for example, pull up Coupon Sherpa and it will find coupons for all nearby stores. Present your iPhone at checkout to redeem your coupon. A downside? You may run into issues with retailers not willing to redeem virtual coupons. A big plus? Exclusive Coupon Sherpa App coupons.

Shopper

Making and organizing your grocery shopping list has never been so easy. Create a shopping list and add items to your list as you think of them. Maintain more than one list – drug store, grocery store, hardware store, etc – and the list is organized by aisle to keep you on task while shopping. One of my favorite features is that you can share your list with family members so they can grocery shop for you! And the newest highlight is that Shopper is integrated with you local weekly flyers, so as you shop you will see any relevant sales at local stores. Nice. But, nice comes with a price of $1.99.

NexTag Mobile

The online comparison shopping site, NexTag goes mobile in this App. You can search and browse NexTag’s catalog to compare prices, read product reviews and mark your favorites for later purchase. While this does compare local retailers, the real power in NexTag is its vast online catalog and reviews. It’s a great way to find the best product for the best price and then buy it from home and earn cash back using ShopAtHome.

I Hear Ewe

I know what you’re thinking, “One of these things is not like the others” but as a mom shopping with young kids I can tell you that possibly the best shopping App is one that entertains my little ones. This App occupies antsy toddlers with 24 realistic animal sounds. When your tot touches an animal, the phone announces what the animal is and then makes the sound. For example, “This is the sound a cow makes. Mooo.” A great way for your babe to learn and keep happy while you shop, shop, shop.

Happy Shopping!

Coupons… on Your Cell Phone?

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

If internet coupons are the new Sunday Paper, then consider cell phone coupons to be the next wave of smart money-saving.

The New York Times wrote a really intriguing article all about the new type of coupon user: those who, instead of hunting through the newspaper to get the latest steals and deals, save themselves time (and, of course, money) by getting new coupons sent directly to their phones. Here’s a snippet of the article:

Mobile coupons — usually text messages with discount codes sent to a cellphone — are becoming the blue-light specials for the digital age, promoting last-minute clothing sales, two-for-one entrees and cheap tickets to the theater.

While some mobile coupons are sent directly from a retailer to a customer who has signed up for mobile updates, the other way for bargain-seekers to get up-to-the-minute deals is to subscribe to a mobile-coupon aggregator. At Web sites like 8coupons, Cellfire, Yowza and Zavers, users can sign up for different retailers’ promotions in one place. The opt-in model means subscribers get only offers they want to receive, making each one worth reading.

Snipping out coupons from the weekend paper is still the most common way households in the United States get their coupons, but the popularity of coupons delivered via e-mail and text messages is growing. In the first half of 2009, nearly 10 million digital coupons were redeemed, a 25 percent increase over the amount redeemed during the same period in 2008, according to Inmar, a coupon-processing company.

I personally use cell phone coupons every now and then. A lot of restaurants set up a texting plan to keep you updated on the latest deals and coupons they have (and keep you interested in their brand)… the one I probably use the most would be from the restaurant On the Border’s coupon texting service (I really, REALLY love their Sopapillas!), but I know that Arby’s, Burger King and a ton of others offer text message coupons as well.

Plus, if you have an iPhone, there are a ton of different services available to you that other users can’t access (which you already knew about) like the aforementioned Yowza! app.

For those of you who have heard of Cell Phone Coupons… do you use your Cell Phone to save you money? If you’re new to it, would you consider trying it out?
