ShopAtHome.com Statistics & in the News!

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Yesterday was a BIG press day for ShopAtHome.com, and it’s been a HUGE November for all of us here, too! Because we truly consider you family (after all, where would we be without our users?), we thought you might like to share in a little bit of our holiday joy. First off, how about a couple of crazy statistics? We’re absolutely in awe of how big the shopping season was this year… and how important it was for each and every one of you to save!

Black Friday Visits
Change: 283%

Cyber Monday Visits
Change: 242%

While those number might seem big, here’s something that will make them seem even bigger: Online Marketing Firm Coremetrics announced that “Online sales in the U.S. rose 16 percent today from a year ago as consumers hunted for bargains on Cyber Monday.” So, while this number is only views (we don’t know how many people bought… or how much Cash Back you’re all going to get as of now, but when we do, I’ll let you know. Let’s start guessing how high the number will be!), we think that we’re going to beat that 16% by a LOT!

And a little bit less surprising was our top ten most popular stores… because we know how much you love so many of them!

Walmart
Best Buy
Kohl’s
Toys ‘R’ Us
PhotoBucket.com
Swagbucks
JCPenney
Sears
PhotoWorks.com
Kmart

On the press end, some fabulous things have been happening! You already saw the post about Karen from Frugal RI Mama’s news appearance, but here are two more!

1. ABC7 Denver: ShopAtHome.com is featured in an interview by 7NEWS Reporter Jaclyn Allen! If you watch the video, you’ll see a bunch of us from the office, including our CEO and Vice President (and your faithful blogger!). We had a blast doing this and were honored to be chosen!

2. The amazing Marcy from Stretching a Buck Blog was so amazing to mention us when she went on the air at her local NBC4 Columbus station! She offered a fabulous interview filled with insightful thoughts and great tips on saving big (a certain blogger here at ShopAtHome.com may have taken advantage of that insanely great Gap deal, too!). Check out the video and once again, congrats to Marcy!

These are just two clips (three, if you count the amazing Mrs. Wilmes’ too!)

Those are a couple little highlights that we knew you’d want to see!

Kate from The Shopping Mama: How to Stay Sane Shopping on Black Friday

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

We all have our reasons for enjoying the Thanksgiving holiday, and there’s plenty to love. The delicious spreads of tasty food and accompanying gluttony, the Macy’s Thanksgiving day parade, football games on the television and family matches in the yard.  But, for the true shoppers out there, Thanksgiving marks the Day Before. The Day Before millions will hit stores nationwide hunting for the best deals of the holiday season on Black Friday. Yes, for me, Thanksgiving is all about the official start of the last minute holiday shopping season.

I must confess to being one of those Black Friday shoppers who traveled a few miles to the shopping mecca (aka the Outlet Mall) last year. Not really out of the ordinary. Until I tell you that I went with my 12 DAY old baby and two year old son. It was, well, DUMB and I don’t recommend it. But, I couldn’t resist the urge to shop for those once a year bargains. So I loaded the stroller (an accessory that no matter how sleek, will always prove cumbersome while fighting crowds around the 50% off rack in babyGap), packed a diaper bag and hit the largest outlet mall in the country.

Despite the inevitable crowds, lines and hassle, for many like me nothing stops the yearly Black Friday pilgrimage to the  local shopping mall to experience the thrill of victory (“$50 off a Wii gaming system!”) and agony of defeat (“Zhu Zhu Pets are Sold Out!” ).

But, there’s an alternative to hoofing it around the mall and driving from store to store on Black Friday. Wait a couple days and shop from the comfort of home and participate in the  online shopping phenomenon that is “Cyber Monday.” Cyber Monday is the Monday following Thanksgiving when online retailers hope you’ll make purchases you put off, couldn’t find or avoided in brick and mortar stores.

It’s no wonder Cyber Monday has grown in popularity in recent years.  (Consumers reportedly spent $846 million online on Cyber Monday 2008.)  Shopping online is comfortable (there’s no need to drag newborns from the comfort of home) and easy. With all the information on the internet, it’s simple to find sales, comparison shop, and locate coupon codes online (um, hello, ShopAtHome!).

Even with all the benefits of skipping the madness that is the mall on Black Friday, I must admit that I’ll probably hit the mall again this year. But, I’m leaving the kids at home. I won’t be making that mistake again. Whether you’ll brave the mall or shop in your pj’s from home, happy shopping! And Happy Thanksgiving.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday Shopping Tips from ShopAtHome.com

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Black Friday, the big Day After Thanksgiving shopping time, is coming soon. This year, Black Friday is November 27, 2009. What are your plans to make sure you save the biggest amount of money when shopping for Christmas? I know you’ve heard the horror stories… people waking up at 3 am to start their day of shopping, crowds and crowds of men and women shouting, pushing and fighting. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. But, there are ways to avoid all of this chaos, and there’s no need to deal with crowds.

Here are some of the best shopping tips for Black Friday and Cyber Monday, all from people who know the best ways to save money: ShopAtHome.com users!

If anyone is planning on Black Friday shopping, put together a shopping team with friends and family. Put together a wish list with your team. Then go over all the ads, even Black Friday online sales that might take place. Search for any Black Friday coupons via paper or online printable coupons. Group similar items by store. Map out the store routes that you want to hit and know the store layouts. It is best if you split up in several cars so you can hit all the best sales as soon as the doors open. You can have several people staying home to watch all the kids and one person doing the online shopping. Putting together a game plan will ensure you get the items on your wishlist.

Many stores, including Kohl’s and Walmart, have online Black Friday deals that are very similar to the sales that people beat down the doors at 4 a.m. to grab. On Thanksgiving night, I set up my shopping station next to my bed. I have my laptop. my circulars, and my credit cards ready to go. I set my alarm for whatever time the sales are set to begin, and grab the deals that I really want- cozy in my pjs! The following Monday I’m at it again- Cyber Monday! Amazing deals to be had- usually especially on electronics and other tech-y items.

Black Friday…. I know, I know, people try and avoid black Friday like the plague or like that co-worker who stinks real bad. But here is how to make Black Friday shopping work for you. After you have eaten your HUGE thanksgiving dinner and you are feeling blissful and satisfied (this part is very important, simple because the idea of shopping at 5am the next morning would seem crazy if you weren’t in a turkey coma!) sit down with the Black Friday deals from that day’s paper, your computer and a pen and paper. As far as internet ads go, I look up EVERY store that I am looking at a paper ad for. Simple because that particular store may have a great instore deal but an even better online deal or visa versa. Store such as Best Buy, Toys-R-Us, and Target have both in store and online coupons and deals exclusively for Black Friday, so be sure to check them both out.
