ShopAtHome.com’s Thrifty Chatter, Featuring AmyLovesIt.com

February 4th, 2010

For this week’s Thrifty Chatter, we’re talking with Amy, the owner of AmyLovesIt.com. Her site is an amazing resource for those of you who are thinking about starting a debt-free lifestyle or just want to learn a little more about saving money. Amy is also a Pastor’s wife, and shares bits of her life and knowledge every day with her readers.

AmyLovesIt Logo

A big thanks to Amy for participating!

How did you start Amy Loves It?

I began blogging in August 2008, and started out writing about my girls and homeschooling. In December, I decided to move into more “serious” blogging. I was discovering the joys of couponing and sale-shopping, and I wanted to help others learn what I was learning. I also felt a call to write and minister to others, specifically other pastor’s wives. I purchased my domain, and began writing at Amy Loves It in March 2009.

What has been the most rewarding part of writing on Amy Loves It?

The most rewarding part of writing on Amy Loves It would be the way I am able to minister to so many people! It is amazing the wonderful people I have met just through blogging. I have made some very dear friends through blogging. I have been blessed in so many different ways. Blogging is just an incredible blessing.

Do you have a funny or interesting story about something that has happened because of your blog?

As I said before, I have been blessed to meet several amazing people because of blogging. The very first blog I ever read was Keeping the Kingdom First. It was so awesome to meet Alyssa in person last March. We continued chatting on Twitter, and now I count Alyssa (and her family) as one of my very best friends. Without my blog, (and Twitter), this might not have been possible.

How have you used ShopAtHome.com to save money, and what is your favorite store to shop from when you use ShopAtHome.com?

I love ShopAtHome! I believe the last store I shopped through SAH was Old Navy, and it was double cash-back day, and I made a TON of money off of my purchase… and I did not spend a lot of money :) I was thrilled! I am new to SAH, but not new to cash-back sites. I always check before I shop to see who has the best cash-back offer, and many times, SAH is the best!

What do you think is the best deal you’ve ever found?

Oh, my! The best deal I have found? My husband loves the free food and free stuff, but I think the best “deal” I have gotten is going grocery shopping with my two oldest girls. They are 5 and 3.5, and use the terms, “coupon,” and “sale,” frequently when they play. They enjoy going to the grocery store with me and couponing. Both girls are learning the importance of wise shopping and frugal living. That is the best deal I could ever get!

If you could only give one piece of advice to someone who is just starting to coupon and save their money, what would it be?

My best advice to a new couponer and money-saver would be to start slow. Do not try to be a couponing expert on your first trip. Follow the great couponing blogs, and try to do only a few “deals” and scenarios. If you try to do it all on your first trip, it can be overwhelming. By starting slowly, you can learn the tricks of the trade, and you will see your savings grow with every grocery shopping trip.

Crystal at MoneySavingMom.com: Feeding Our Family on $40 a Week, Part 4

February 3rd, 2010

We’ve talked about a lot of things in this series, from menu-planning, to using coupons, to planning your menu based upon what you have on hand and what is on sale at the store.

Today were going to talk about one of my biggest secrets for grocery saving success: practicing the Buy Ahead Principle. What’s that, you ask?

Well, basically, other than dairy products and produce, I aim to never pay full price for anything. Instead, I try to buy enough of a product when an item is on sale at its lowest price to tide me over until the next sale.

grocerylistPhoto Source

For instance, in this shopping trip picture, you’ll see that I mainly stocked up on cereal. In fact, I bought 16 boxes of cereal–enough to last us for at least 6 weeks, likely longer. Did we only eat cereal that week? No way! We actually only ate a few boxes of cereal that week and the rest of what we ate mostly came from items I’d stocked up on during previous sales.

Because I stock up on items when they are on sale at my target price (providing I can afford it in our $40 per week grocery budget), my grocery shopping trips will usually look quite strange and will certainly not be the basis for a balanced menu. But you can check out some of our menus here to see that we do eat a fairly balanced diet. Well, at least we’re certainly not subsisting on Easy Mac and Jell-O every meal!

How do we have varied menus when I buy such an odd assortment of groceries each week? It’s because the majority of our meals are based upon what we already have in our refrigerator, pantry, and freezer–our stockpile of items which I’ve purchased in bulk at 60-100% off the retail price.

For many people who are used to buying only what groceries you’ll use in the next few days, practicing the Buy-Ahead Principle can seem mind-boggling. However, I highly recommend you at least give it a try as it can save you a great deal of money. In fact, I would estimate that we routinely save at least $30-$50 each week by doing so.

However, if this is a new concept for you, don’t go out and spend $500 tomorrow trying to build up a stockpile. Instead, just designate a small percentage of your grocery budget each week to buying extra of those heavily-discounted items which you know you will use sometime in the next few months.

For instance, if toothpaste is on sale for $1.50 and you have 5 $1 off coupons, go ahead and buy 5 at $0.50 each. It will likely take you a few months to use all that toothpaste and, by then, there will have been another sale you can take advantage of. Instead of paying $2.50 per tube of toothpaste every time you need it, you’ll pay $2.50 for five tubes of toothpaste.

These little $1 and $2 savings really start to add up. And once youve built up a good stockpile of items, you’ll find that you rarely ever will pay full price for anything again. Plus, you wont have to run to the store every time you run out of toilet paper. Instead, you can just run to your storage closet and get a package from your stockpile that you got on a great sale!

ShopAtHome.com’s Thrifty Chatter, featuring ThriftyNWMom!

January 28th, 2010

I’m so excited to welcome Jennifer from ThriftyNWMom.com to the ShopAtHome.com Thrifty Chatter Series! Her blog is super inspirational to so many, and I think you guys are really going to love what she has to say. Let’s get started:

Picture of Me for Blog

How did you start ThriftyNWMom?

I have always loved finding amazing deals – it’s exciting to me and part of that excitement is being able to share my great finds with others so they can take advantage of the sales, too! In the past, I’d always call or email friends or family about many of the deals I’d find but then I realized it made more sense to put it all in one place. So, I started this blog a year ago in January just as a way for friends & family to keep up with all the great deals I’d find and for me to be able to share about my newfound love of couponing – how to spend less & get more for your money.

What has been the most rewarding part of writing on ThriftyNWMom?

Definitely hearing the stories from my readers about how my blog has impacted their lives and helped them out during these tough economic times. I receive emails on a regular basis from readers, sharing how they have been inspired to start couponing and finding ways to cut their budgets. However, due to the bargains I’ve found, they’ve still been able to enjoy some of the ‘finer’ things in life (going out to eat, buying Christmas gifts, buying brand-name products) that may not have been possible due to financial difficulties.

Do you have a funny or interesting story about something that has happened because of your site?

It always surprises me when I’m out shopping and end up running into someone who is a reader of my blog! We’ll get talking about couponing and finding deals in the Northwest and then I find out that they’re a reader! This just happened to me last week at Target – I found several readers while shopping the toy clearance – so we were sharing stories of which Target’s we needed to check out next & strategies for finding those deals we really wanted!

How have you used ShopAtHome.com to save money, and what is your favorite store to shop from when you use ShopAtHome.com?

I just recently found out about Shop At Home during the Christmas shopping season & I’m so glad I’ve discovered it. Shop At Home is a great resource to help you save money by earning that cash back on your purchases. It also has helped me find some great coupons & additional discounts to use at my favorite stores! Although I have many favorite online stores, I’d say the one I use the most is Target.com – love that Shop At Home offers 5% cash back for shopping at Target! They have some great online deals that you often can’t find in their stores!

What do you think is the best deal you’ve ever found?

A Britax Marathon car seat for around $70 on Amazon. It was a pricing error on Amazon back in the fall of 2008 (before I started blogging) and unfortunately Amazon canceled many of the orders. But, I was one of the fortunate ones who actually received my car seat! Considering these car seats are typically priced at $250 and higher-this was an *amazing* deal!

If you could only give one piece of advice to someone who is just starting to coupon and save their money, what would it be?

Start small so you don’t get overwhelmed by the idea of couponing and saving money! You don’t have to go out there and try to do every deal that’s listed and try to shop at all the stores. Just pick one store to start focusing on – start looking at the sales, gathering your printable coupons or coupon inserts each week and then focus on going in to just get a few good deals at a time. Once you get the hang of it, then you can start adding more and more deals at that store and eventually spread out to include additional stores.

Thanks so much to Jennifer for taking time out of her hectic schedule to share a little bit with all of us! To learn more about Jennifer and how she helps her readers save, head to ThriftyNWMom.com!

Kate from TheShoppingMama.com: Best Shopping Apps for Your iPhone

January 27th, 2010

When you’re shopping from the comfort of your own home, it’s easy to comparison shop and find the best deals – visit ShopAtHome.com, of course. But, when you’re on the go and shopping at brick and mortar stores comparing prices is a bit of a challenge unless you want to drive from store to store. And, clearly that’s no fun and it’s just not practical. Thankfully modern technology is here to help. Here are some must have iPhone Apps to help you shop and save on the go.

Shop Savvy

Turn your phone into a barcode with this free app (also available for download to Google Android). Aim your camera phone at a bar code and hold still. From there, Shop Savvy does all the work. It scans the barcode and searches more than 20,000 online and local retailers to find the best price. Using your location, Shop Savvy will tell you the best local major retailer (think Target, Best Buy, Walmart) to buy the product. It will also let you know where to find the best price online. With the prices right in front of you, make an educated decision whether to buy in store or online. You can even add items to a Wish List and receive Price Alerts. This App is so cool, it’s hard to believe it’s free.

Coupon Sherpa

This App generates in-store coupons based on your location. So, when you’re at the mall, for example, pull up Coupon Sherpa and it will find coupons for all nearby stores. Present your iPhone at checkout to redeem your coupon. A downside? You may run into issues with retailers not willing to redeem virtual coupons. A big plus? Exclusive Coupon Sherpa App coupons.

Shopper

Making and organizing your grocery shopping list has never been so easy. Create a shopping list and add items to your list as you think of them. Maintain more than one list – drug store, grocery store, hardware store, etc – and the list is organized by aisle to keep you on task while shopping. One of my favorite features is that you can share your list with family members so they can grocery shop for you! And the newest highlight is that Shopper is integrated with you local weekly flyers, so as you shop you will see any relevant sales at local stores. Nice. But, nice comes with a price of $1.99.

NexTag Mobile

The online comparison shopping site, NexTag goes mobile in this App. You can search and browse NexTag’s catalog to compare prices, read product reviews and mark your favorites for later purchase. While this does compare local retailers, the real power in NexTag is its vast online catalog and reviews. It’s a great way to find the best product for the best price and then buy it from home and earn cash back using ShopAtHome.

I Hear Ewe

I know what you’re thinking, “One of these things is not like the others” but as a mom shopping with young kids I can tell you that possibly the best shopping App is one that entertains my little ones. This App occupies antsy toddlers with 24 realistic animal sounds. When your tot touches an animal, the phone announces what the animal is and then makes the sound. For example, “This is the sound a cow makes. Mooo.” A great way for your babe to learn and keep happy while you shop, shop, shop.

Happy Shopping!

ShopAtHome.com Gives Back!

January 25th, 2010

With all the success we’ve been sharing with you these past few months, we thought that it was time that we let you know a little bit more about what ShopAtHome.com has been doing to give back both in our community and around the world. Since October, we’ve worked with some amazing organizations, and we’re so honored to have the opportunity to change lives with your help!

“As a company that is known for giving cash back to our customers, ShopAtHome.com is also committed to giving back to those in need. We donated over $5,000.00 to local charities in 2009 and are also giving $2800 to support the relief efforts in Haiti. We are very grateful to be in the position we are today and have made giving back to those less fortunate a top priority at ShopAtHome.com!” – ShopAtHome.com CEO, Marc Braunstein

ui_komen_logo

In October 2009, ShopAtHome.com committed to give $1 for every purchase made from the Breast Cancer Awareness page to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Denver Metropolitan organization.

The Denver Metropolitan Affiliate of Susan G Komen for the Cure was founded in 1994, the year after the first Komen Denver Race for the Cure, to carry out the promise of our National organization — to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. The Affiliate continually strives to meet this promise through three core activities — education, fundraising and grant making.

The page, along with an extra donation from the company, raised $2500 for the organization. ShopAtHome.com is so honored to play a part in helping to erase Breast Cancer for good in the lives of all men and women!

UWMH_LOGO

In the hopes of enriching the lives of others during the holiday season, ShopAtHome.com sent out an email where our subscribers just had to click a button and we’d donate $.10 per click. It was amazing to see how many users took a couple of seconds out of their day to click on the email… so many, in fact, that we’ve just sent a check to the Mile High United Way for $2500! From offering help to Denver-area families, adults and children in need, the Mile High United Way is an amazing organization and one that deserves all the support it can get!

redcrosslogo

Our first philanthropic mission in 2010 didn’t require much thought once January 12th, 2010 came. We knew that we needed to do something to help the over three million Haitians whose lives had been affected by the quake, as well as the families of the over 150,000 who are no longer with us. So, every department here at ShopAtHome.com banded together and for every donation from an employee, no matter how much it may be, the company would donate $100! Our final donation by ShopAtHome.com was $2800 (not bad for a company of less than fifty employees!). We’re so proud to be participating in this worldwide endeavor to help the people of Haiti.

Now, we want to know: how have you been helping in your community? Have you been donating money, volunteering at a food shelter, or something else? Let us know in the comments!
